The Experience of Peer Gynt in the ground

PEER GYNT is a great literature work by the Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen presents a large number of elements of the author’s own background, history society phenomena in his period and his opinion of that.I took the sense 8 as my design text because it is the most fantasy and imaginative part while it express the essential idea self identify of Peer Gynt clearly in this fragments.

There are plenty of scese of Peer Gynt with multi-locations and long period of time which illustrate unstageable, fast-speed characters in the whole script. From my own understand, Peer is like a child who are exploring the possibilities of himself and trying to identify his own personality and the position in the society. Therefore, affected by the primary school atmosphere and phenomenon of children, the design for this sense would be treat in children’s way. theme is child dark fairy tale style creation.

This is a theatre design for both the site-specific theatre and traditional theaters (they may happen independent or or in rationale ). For site-specific theatre design, I would like to create a immersive space personalized and experience for specters. Owning to the particularity of sense 8, this design is not specially for children though lots of elements of child were inserted. The ideal effect on specters via this designed experience is re-think about of their childhood dreams as well as different possibilities of their life.

According to the understanding of the script, the whole work illustrates a eerie, surrealist style atmosphere. As you can see from the profile. It is the space of an irregular rectangular body, the left is an hourglass type of space, the right is a elongated rectangular space that link to the top and bottom of the hourglass. There are backwards, abstract form shapes of aquatic in large scale in the first section of the inside of the hourglass, at the bottom of the first section, there is a circular channel with access to the lower half of the hourglass interior. In this second part of the hourglass, there is a huge hanging baby head which made of rubber production with inside set light. From the right of this part is a channel to reach the elongated rectangular space, which can lead to the top of the work.

The most characteristic part of this design is the vertical type of experience. For site-specific performance, audience jump into the space from the top of the hourglass, conduct experience downward, then crawled back to the ground from a straight ladder. This route was inspired by the beautiful lakes landscape and troll culture in Norway. Trolls are the orthodox myths legends in Norway, I matched it with lakes in Norway which convey a mysterious atmosphere. An assumption was made that Peer is fact fell down the lakes where trolls are living. The choice of underground excavation theater is about some raw (real world), and death (underground world) meaning. In addition to internal hourglass and long rectangular straight ladder is white, and glowing baby’s head, the other part is black, is designed to mimic the environment of underground theater. It also draws on some recreational facilities of children.

The hourglass appearance was inspired by a movie, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button which is a story about reverse time. From the context of Peer Gynt, I understand the story into reverse time as well: At the beginning of the story ,Peer is reckless and selfish ,nonetheless, he get down peacefully in the arms of a lover, is like adults who with secular heart recur the innocent heart in childhood. On the other hand, the design of the vertical type of audience implicate the feeling of “experience of time,”

The king of mountain is one of the most central role in this one-act play, for the scene, he should be the center of the scene atmosphere, for the characters in the play or specters, he is the dominant role in the entire field. For some stereotype views of him should be a old cruel man, however, in the development in my process, especially the element of children, the use of child avatar to represent a strong in contrast.

As for design in traditional theatre in the case, dueling to the plenty amount of scenes of the event, the whole art work would be divided into three different spaces. All of the performance acting, properties moving and transformation of senses will be carried out under the gaze of the audience. The actors moving route would be the same as the cooperators’ route in the specific theatre. Design of lighting, the utilization of the choice of color, space and the transformation will be more varied but just limited to this one design.

For this practice, I thought about the design for space, time, performance and the feeling of audience a lot. I will take this point that combination of the traditional theatre and the site-specific theatre for my other designs. However, I have not really thought about the actual apply of this design in real about materials, budget, the limitation of technology, amount of audiences and their need.
